Making Friends with Avon: Part 1

Back in 1990, when I became an AVON representative for the first time, my main motivation was to make and save some money without spending time away from my children. I had recently moved to a new town, and didn't have any local friends. I signed up and received my starter kit from a woman named Marion, who seemed to have more cats than I had local acquaintances. Marion told me all about her Mrs. Albee figurines, about how important it was to have many "helpers", and assured me that if she could succeed in AVON, that I could, too. I left her home feeling more confused than confident, but I was excited to begin something new. I had 10 brochures for the current campaign, and a few pieces of new representative information. 

During the following week, I shared my brochures with a neighbor, my immediate family, and a couple I met. To my surprise, one of my new acquaintances called me in a few days to give me orders from people at her workplace totaling over $100. This is something that continued every campaign for a couple years. I gave her a discount on her own order, and shared new products with her to reward her for the business she brought me. Through the course of those phone calls and order deliveries, we began talking about our lives and our children, and supported each other as single parents. 

This was the beginning of something important I learned about AVON, and about myself. This business is about high quality products that are fairly priced, that everyone can use, and that anyone can sell. More importantly, this business is about sharing the products and the opportunity with great people.

As I grew my business, I progressed from sales to recruiting new representatives. My first team member became such a good friend she brought me home cooked meals and watched my kids when I was sick.   


The first couple of years in business with Avon grew friendships that provided support and relief from the loneliness of relocation.  And I realized that the Avon business is not just about great beauty products, it is about the people I meet, and the friends I find.
